A washout that would swallow a Landcruiser - Kalumburu Road |
4th June 2012 12663 kilometres to date
We are off to the most remote Aboriginal Community in
Australia. The
Kalumburu Road is
long, rough and tough. It is a constant barrage of potential tyre killers and
corrugations, washouts and dips. It is windy and very slow going in sections.
The grader has been along most of the road and just as well as there was a
washout that would swallow a Landcruiser not far north of Drysdale Station. The
worst section is between
Carson's
River and Kalumburu.

McGowans Island - Kalumburu |
The Carson's
River is the deepest crossing we have come across and it had a decent current.
Kalumburu is a decent enough town. If you are in there at the right time, you
can get groceries from the store and fuel. Diesel was $3.70. We stayed twenty
kilometres north at McGowans
Island. We were greeted
by a large tongue pierced, cigarette rolling, non caring black fella. There is
no electricity, hot water, toilet paper, rubbish collection and you are not
allowed to camp on the grass. It is a really good spot though.

John had fun in
the shower playing with the frogs after I had cleaned it. There are a few
mozzies at night and loads of driftwood for the fire. Needless to say, the boat
was set up almost straight away and Chris was very excited about the big fish
we were going to catch.
